WHAT TO DO AFTER AN ACCIDENT
We recently received a telephone call from a professor at UCLA.  After school on a
Tuesday afternoon while she was driving on Sepulveda Blvd towards her home in
Culver City she stopped at a red light.  When her light turned green she entered
the intersection.  Suddenly, a car came from her left, entered the intersection and
hit her on her left side.  The impact was so strong that her side impact airbags
deployed and her car was pushed 15 feet.  When she was finally able to get out of
the car, she spoke with the driver of the other car, a bald man with a mustache as
she described him. The man seemed very caring, he said he was sorry, and told
her that he would take care of everything.  As witnesses drove by and offered help,
the man told them that everything was under control and advised them to leave.
The man then wrote his name, telephone number and license plate number on a
piece of paper and left the scene.  The professor tried to drive home, realized she
was in intense pain, and called an ambulance which rushed her to the emergency
room of the UCLA medical center.  It later turned out that she had severe nerve
damage in her lumbar spine.

After the professor was released from the hospital the following day, she called her
insurance company.  It was then that she learned that the man that caused the
accident had put the blame of the accident on her and had already made a claim
for personal injuries to her insurance company.  In fact, the man even fabricated
his own witness who testified that the professor ran a red light.

In order to protect yourself from this situation, which is not too uncommon, we have
listed below certain guidelines that should be followed in the event that you are
involved in an accident.

STEP ONE: STAY CALM & CALL 911 IF YOU OR ANYONE IS INJURED

When an accident happens, whether its a motor vehicle crash, a train wreck, or a
slip & fall, the most important thing is to stay calm and immediately call 911.  This is
key because at the end of the day the most important thing is your health.  The
paramedics will treat you at the scene and transport you to a hospital if needed.
Second, the officers that arrive at the scene will speak to any witnesses and obtain
all the necessary information.

STEP TWO: GATHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION

If our professor in the example above had got the names and telephone numbers
of the witnesses who stopped to help, her story would have had a happy ending.
Here is a brief list of the essential information you should collect at the scene of any
accident:
  1. Witness Info: Name, telephone number, and address for all witnesses.
  2. Other Party Info: Name, telephone number, and address for all parties involved in the
    accident.
  3. License Plate Number: For of all vehicles involved in the accident.
  4. Driver's License Number: For all drivers involved in the accident.
  5. Insurance Information: You need the company name and policy number for all other
    drivers.

STEP THREE: CALL US FOR A FREE CONSULTATION

It is very important for an attorney to start working on a case as soon as possible.
Because memories fade and evidence is lost over time, an attorney will be able to
properly evaluate the case and gather all the necessary information.  At our office,
we routinely send a field investigator to take photographs, obtain any videotapes,
and to take statements from witnesses.  This way we preserve important evidence
from the beginning which will later enable us to successfully resolve any claims.
We welcome you to give us a call and sit down with an experienced attorney who
can evaluate your case and make sure its off to a good start.
